1:1:Infinity, Issue 5

"We get in touch with things at the point they break down // Even in the absence of spectators and audiences, dust circulates..."
West Space, Melbourne. Onsite, 10 Jul - 18 Oct 2021. Offsite, 10 Jul 2021 - Indeterminate.

Issue 5 Part 1 was recorded on Wednesday 7th July, when a small group were invited into the partially installed exhibition to sense the works, and co-author a collective audiodescription of impressions and responses.

The West Space onsite exhibition opened July 10, but closed prematurely due to Covid lockdowns. Issue 5 Part 2 was drafted by Harriet Jones during lockdown, reflecting on memories of the ephemeral exhibition.

IMAGE DESCRIPTION:

Shadowed surface from the inside of a scanner — someone must be pressing it flat. A scrap of tape holds down the paper gift of a fortune cookie, a bit crumpled, it reads, ‘Knowing is not as good as loving.’ Wistful italics. Letters lean.

Issue 5 Part 3 was composed by J (ju ca, picnic, etc) during lockdown. J had intended to visit the onsite exhibition, but was unable to due to the sudden closure. Their audiodescriptive work filters conversations with Harriet Jones, and components of the exhibition circulating online.

A co-publishing initiative of 3-ply and Liquid Architecture’s Disclaimer journal, 1:1:Infinity is a serial audio publication, conceived as an episodic column that offers a radical expansion in ratios of access. Voiced descriptions of artworks, performances, and situations, commissioned from our friends and associates, pivot on the Describer as embodied proxy and subjective guide. Turning from objective tropes, we invite conversational, improvised description, as if speaking to an intimate other. Each description is recorded in place, as the narrator navigates spontaneous perceptions, personal reactions, and critical relations to works, structures, and happenings we cannot see.
