This artist book surveys Matt Hinkley’s practice from 2008-9, focusing on drawing interventions on found posters, newspaper and card stock, exhibited as part of New08 at ACCA and solo shows at Neon Parc (Matt Hinkley) and Sarah Cottier (Folio). The period surveyed introduces Hinkley’s transition from 2D to 3D objects as the target substrate for his repetitive patterning. Through Hinkley’s approach to image composition, and his deft use of the concertina presentation, this book operates as a mutable series of artworks. As the book is unfolded/refolded, the pages frame shifting relationships between works, installation details, studio snapshots and reference materials.
3-ply was a silent partner in the publication of Matt Hinkley’s concertina book. The success of the project motivated the transition of 3-ply to a formal publishing entity.
